Lista de archivos modificables de Windows XP, Vista y 7

Se puede usar Resource Hacker o Reshack, o cualquier otro editor similar para modificar estos archivos.
Si estas modificando para re-integrar el archivo al CD de instalacion de Windows XP, asegura usar los pasos adecuados...como usando makecab.exe, etc.
Para Windows XP
%windir%\System32\NToskrnl.exe : Para cambiar la pantalla de inicio o boot screen
%windir%\System32\Logonui.exe : Para cambiar la pantalla de Login o Login Screen
%windir%\System32\MSgina.dll : Para cambiar el texto y el fondo de la ventana de apagar Windows o Shutdown dialog box
%windir%\System32\Shell32.dll : Cambiar ventanas de progreso, copiando, eliminando archivos, Ventana de Run o Ejecutar, menus de contexto y otros
%windir%\System32\Netshell.dll : Cambiar el icono de internet en la bandeja del sistema
%windir%\System32\Comdlg32.dll : Cambiar la apariencia de de ventanas de Guardar o Abrir, cajas de colores, de imprimir, buscar, etc.
%windir%\System32\Comctl32.dll : Cambiar los iconos cuales aparecen arriba a la derecha de ventanas de Guardar y Abrir o Open/Save dialog boxes.
%windir%\System32\Stobject.dll : Cambiar icono de volumen y otros en la bandeja del sistema
%windir%\System32\mydocs.dll : Cambiar icono de Mis Documentos o My Documents
%windir%\System32\shdocvw.dll : Cambiar iconos e imagenes de Internet Explorer 6
%windir%\System32\IEFrame.dll : Cambiar iconos e imagenes de Internet Explorer 7
%windir%\System32\shimgvw.dll : Para cambiar iconos de imagenes como BMP, JPG, GIF, etc.
%windir%\System32\Sysdm.cpl : Para cambiar la apariencia de Propiedades del Sistema
%windir%\System32\Winlogon.exe : Para cambiar el texto que se ve en la ventana de inicio o login, como "Apagar, suspender, etc.
%windir%\Explorer.exe :Cambiar texto del boton de inicio y los sub-menu en el Menu de inicio, Favoritos, Documentos, etc.
%windir%\System32\browselc.dll : Cambiar los nombres de los menus en el explorador de Windows y tambien Internet Explorer
Windows XP Setup folder\I386\Winntbbu.dll : Cambiar la apariencia de la instalacion de Windows XP
Para Windows Vista

Windows Version Image in About Windows dialog box -> %windir%\Branding\Basebrd\basebrd.dll
Windows Version Image in Login Screen bottom -> %windir%\Branding\Basebrd\basebrd.dll
Classic Start button flag and Classic Start menu left side image -> %windir%\Branding\Shellbrd\shellbrd.dll

Above are the new system files/locations in Windows Vista which were not present in earlier versions, like XP. But if you want to change look of various dialog boxes like RUN, Progress, System Properties, Startmenu and Taskbar Properties, etc. Then you'll have to edit the same system files which you used to edit in Windows XP. The difference is, now those files don't contain the resources but their .MUI files do.
So if you want to edit RUN dialog box which was present in "%windir%\System32\Shell32.dll" file in XP, is now present in "%windir%\System32\en-US\Shell32.dll.mui" file in Windows Vista.
So in following list, I'll tell you where all those files are present in Windows Vista:
